Sweet paniyaram – Sweet paniyaram or sweet appam is a commonly made South Indian breakfast or snack item. It is very popular among kids and can be made with wheat flour, rice flour or soaking and grinding rice and urad dal. Here I have shown you how to make an instant version of sweet paniyaram made with rice flour, bananas and brown sugar.
Recipe notes
- Measure and take equal amounts of bananas and rice flour. You can either weigh the ingredients or use cup measurements.
- Increase or decrease the amount of sugar according to the sweetness of the bananas.
- You can substitute brown sugar with white sugar, jaggery, coconut sugar or palm sugar.
- Instead of ghee you can also use any neutral flavored oil to cook the paniyaram.
- If you don’t have paniyaram pan, you can make them as pancakes or crepes using a normal tawa.
Sweet paniyaram (with rice flour)
Equipment
- 1 Blender
- 1 paniyaram/appe pan
Ingredients
- ½ cup bananas
- ½ cup rice flour
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- ¼ tsp cardamom powder or 2 cardamom pods
- ¼ tsp baking soda
- A pinch of salt
- Ghee as needed
Instructions
- In a mixer jar add the chopped bananas and rice flour.
- Add ¼ cup of brown sugar. You can increase or decrease the quantity of sugar according to your preference.
- Add the baking soda, salt and cardamom.
- Grind everything together into a smooth paste by adding little water.
- Adjust the consistency by adding less or more water. The consistency should be of dosa batter.
- Heat ghee in a paniyaram/appe pan.
- Pour the batter till it fills halfway. Drizzle ghee over the top.
- Keep on low flame and slowly cook the paniyaram.
- Once it’s browned on one side, gently flip them and cook for around 1 to 2 minutes on low flame.
- Remove from the pan and serve hot or warm.
