How to make Poori Masala | Poori Bhaji | Poori Kizhangu at home
This is a simple vegan dish made in South Indian style that goes well with poori. It is usually had a breakfast side dish for poori but it also tastes good with dosas.
This is a simple and easy recipe to make potato masala for poori which can be made quickly on a busy morning with very few pantry ingredients.

Cooking instructions with step by step pictures
Wash the potatoes and roughly chop them into 4 pieces. Pressure cook potatoes with salt and 2 cups water for 5 whistles in medium flame. Let the pressure release naturally. Peel the skin, mash the potatoes and keep aside
In a pan heat oil and add mustard seeds. Once mustard seeds crackle add urad dal, chana dal and cumin seeds.
Add finely chopped onions, green chillies, curry leaves, salt and turmeric powder and saute till onions turn translucent.
Add capsicum and saute for a minute.
Then add tomatoes and cook till mushy.
Now add mashed potatoes, mix well and add 1 ½ cups of water and bring it to boil. Check for hotness and salt. If you prefer you can add chilli powder at this stage to increase the hotness as per your preference.
Simmer for 5 minutes and serve hot !!
Poori Masala Recipe
Ingredients
- 4 to 5 medium sized potatoes
- 1 big onion
- 1 medium sized tomato
- ½ capsicum
- 6 to 7 green chillies
- ¼ tsp mustard seeds
- ½ tsp chana dal
- ½ tsp split urad dal
- ¼ tsp cumin seeds
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
- 2 tbsp oil
- Salt to taste
